Maddy Tooth has always been drawn to the unconventional side of beauty. She speaks with NOXX about how growing up far from the avant-garde pushed her to be more creative, the fashion designers who inspire her looks and how to achieve the perfect black smokey eye.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and where you grew up?
My name is Maddy, and I am an avant-garde fashion & beauty content creator based in Devon, South West UK. I have been lucky enough to have grown up surrounded by nature; I have a great balance of the countryside, city & beach all close by. I think growing up in an area where avant-garde fashion and beauty isn't recognised has motivated me to be more creative, and share my ideas online to a community of like-minded people. I could talk about fashion and makeup for days; it consumes all of my thoughts. Alongside sharing my creative self online, I am a part-time fashion retail assistant.

How did your passion for makeup come about?
I have been a big makeup lover since I was a teenager. I remember spending hours sitting in my bedroom doing creative makeup looks, and also watching lots of the beauty community on Youtube. I originally started out creating SFX looks and body painting etc, but then fell victim to the cut crease and thick eyebrows... let's just say my style of makeup now has dramatically changed since then.

How would you describe your style in 3 words?
I would describe my style as experimental, dark and avant-garde.

What does beauty mean to you?
To me, beauty is not all about appearance. I see beauty in confidence, in being comfortable in yourself, and in being a good person. However, I also find beauty in many other things such as fashion, music, nature and makeup. I've always been drawn to unconventional beauty and makeup, such as McQueen Fall 2009 or Rick Owens' models wearing black sclera lenses. Designers such as Rick & Lee definitely have a huge influence on my work, especially when it comes to my makeup looks. I also find beauty in decay; Martin Margiela's bianchetto technique immediately comes to mind.

If your aesthetic was a movie soundtrack, what would it sound like?
I think it would be something dark and electronic... One of my favourite runway songs is an Ann Demeulemeester soundtrack called 'The Dialogue of Another Day’, which I think really aligns with me & my personal style, so something similar to that, I think. Think distorted sounds, heavy bass & electronic synths. I listen to a lot of Massive Attack, Underworld and Recoil too, so some elements of those artists would have to be featured.

What are your go-to products for the perfect smoky eye?
I think I've managed to nail a long-lasting black smoky eye now, and after many different product combinations, this one lasts and looks the best. To prime, I use an Elf eyeshadow primer; prepping the eye is really important because you don't want your smoky eye to crease after all that blending! I then go in with the Cheeryep fleeting life palette, and layer the Rabanne colourshot in black to make it extra black. Finally, the YSL Lines Liberated eyeliner for the waterline, and the YSL Lash Latex Mascara.
