Ryoji Ikeda

Ryoji Ikeda is a Japanese electronic composer and visual artist focusing on the sonification of data and exploring the aesthetic potential of mathematical structures. His work spans audiovisual performances, large-scale installations, and electronic music.

Through an exacting balance of intensity and precision, Ikeda translates the invisible structures of the digital world into something tangible and cerebral. Known for his use of pure frequencies, strobing light, and data visualisation, his practice exists at the intersection of sound, image, and data.

“I wanted to compose data into artwork. Data is just a material or subject to be composed. You are actually experiencing binary patterns - 0 and 1, black and white, yes and no. To create a piece like the data verse, I have to prepare a lot like a classical music composer, because you don’t play by yourself - the players are computers.” - Ikeda
